Hi, and welcome!

My name is Ty, and I am an Assistant Professor Teaching Stream with the Centre for Education and Computing (CEMC) and an Adjunct Professor in the Pure Mathematics department at the University of Waterloo.

My research interests are in mapping class groups (big and small!), ordered groups, and low-dimensional topology. See my maths page for more. If you would like to know more, please get in contact or drop by my office!

I am the lead for CEMC's Problem of the month.

I am the principal enigmatologist for this year's edition of Key Clues.

Some shameless self promotion:

My Favourite Theorem - A YouTube short from 2025.
An interview with PIMS on Medium (Feb 2019).
My 2017 TEDxUofTSalon talk.
My 3 Minute Thesis entry from the 2017 UWaterloo finals.
